Mountain golf
beside Peacock Lake.

Huafeng Peacock Lake was an 18-hole mountain course in Mangshi, in Yunnan’s western prefecture of Dehong. The course lay southeast of Peacock Lake, also known as Mangjiu Reservoir.[2]

Wooded slopes framed its fairways, with bunkered greens and flowering gardens around water features.

Joe F. Obringer is credited with the design in Par Golf’s September 2014 course profile. The mountain routing followed the existing terrain, with around 170 metres between its lowest and highest points.[4]

Fairways varied in width through the wooded valley, and nine holes were equipped for night golf. An artificial lake and clubhouse formed a central feature of the course.[4][5]

Natural rock, flowers, fruit trees and water shaped the playing landscape.[4]

The closure record

Closed in May.
Planted in August.

The golf course was shut down in May 2016. It formed part of the Dehong Peacock Lake visitor-service centre development, alongside a hotel and outdoor swimming pool. The local environmental authority confirmed the shutdown date in its September 2023 complaint-handling report.[1]

Tree planting began on 23 August 2016, covering former tees, fairways and bunkers. A contemporary New Beijing News report recorded the work and quoted a club employee confirming that the course was closed for play.[2]

Life after golf

By the 2023 environmental inspection, weeds covered the former course. The adjoining hotel remained in operation.[1]

From the surrounding mountains, former fairway corridors remain visible across the wooded slopes, with Peacock Lake and Mangshi beyond.

A second life on screen

The fairways live on
in another form.

Huafeng Peacock Lake survives in digital form. Simulator developer Rungolf featured its recreation of the closed course in October 2022, preserving another way to experience its former fairways.[3]
